Study the following vocabulary.
Susie: Betty, I am totally freaking out because I made a big mistake at work and I think my boss is angry.
Betty: What? You were slacking off? Or…oh…I know, you were zoning out because you were thinking about the party this weekend!
Susie: No, worse, I wasn’t thinking and I told my boss that the new company policy about working over-time was a rip off. I was just so upset because I always stay late and now I am not going to be paid extra for it!
Betty: Ok, you need to chill out and think of some ways to kiss up to your boss. Then he will like you again, and we can go back to just hanging out.
bum out – to annoy or upset
I was really bummed out that there were no tickets left.
butt in – to rudely interrupt
He apologized for butting in on our conversation.
butt out – to tell someone rudely not to interrupt
Butt out! It is none of your business.
chill out – to relax completely
I spent most of the weekend chilling out at my friend’s house.
freak out – to have a strong reaction to something frightening, exciting, etc
I totally freaked out during the exam, I don’t know what happened.
hang out – to spend time relaxing, doing very little
We have just been hanging out and listening to music.
kiss up – to to try to please someone in order to gain an advantage for yourself
The little boy was trying to kiss up to his teacher in order to get a better report card.
rip off – to cheat somebody by charging too much or selling something of poor quality
The play was terrible, we were completely ripped off.
slack off – to do a task more slowly or to work less hard than you should
We can’t slack off now, the deadline is in three hours.
zone out – to stop thinking or noticing what is going on around you
Relax, take a deep breath, and just zone out for a while it will help you feel less stressed.
