Word order and linking words

Word order

– is very important in English

- you always start with the subject, then the verb follows and then the object

I called Jack.

- time expressions come usually at the end of the sentence (or possibly at the beginning) – they never come to the middle.

I was in the cinema yesterday.

- there are some words that are exceptional: frequency adverbs. They always come before the verb

She usually comes late.

I don't often go swimming.

- in question, as you know very well, there is an inverted word order

What did you say? (NOT What you said?)

- in indirect questions (used in reported speech) the word order stays the same

I don't know what he said. (NOT …what did he say)

Linking words

- you studied them at the elementary level. These are the words like: BUT, BECAUSE, ALTHOUGH, OR, IF, etc.

- You shouldn't have any real problems with them
