original concept – the basic, initial idea for a product or service

market research – studying what particular groups of consumers want,and what they think about certain products and other issues

survey – a process of gathering information through questions about opinions and habits, often conducted by mail,telephone, or in person on the street

focus group – a gathering of average consumers who discuss product ideas informally for research purposes

rollout – the process of making a product available, often in limited area as a test of consumer interest

launch – officially placing a product on the market for sale - usually accompanied by a campaign of advertising, promotions, and other special activities

sales forecast – predictions / estimates of sales of a particular product or line of products made in advance

trials – a synonym for test - trials are conducted to control a products afety, reliability, and function

design defect – also called a design fault, this is an unexpected problem with a product, often discovered after a product is launched

recall – when a firm asks for a particular product to be returned by consumers so that a design defect or other problem can be repaired or addressed
