Study the following vocabulary.

Places of business

wholesaler – store that purchases goods in large quantities and low prices directly from a manufacturer, and in turn resells them to retail stores

retailer – store that sells goods directly to individual consumers

shop / store – general term for a place where people buy goods / services (Note: "shop" is British English, "store" is American)

chain store – one of a group of shops all sharing the same name, selling the same products, etc. (for example, Benetton, Kenvelo, Tesco)

convenience store – a small store located in a residential area providing food and other general items (toiletries, newspapers, cigarettes, alcohol, etc). Often open later than normal stores

department store – a very large store offering a wide selection of goods, such as clothing, home and office goods, etc. Often located in a town center (for example, Macy’s, Marks and Spencer’s, Kotva)

drug store – American store which sells toiletries, medicines, and other personal care products (perfume, makeup, etc)

pharmacy – a store selling prescription and non-prescription medicines

franchise – store owned by an individual who pays for a license to operate it with help from the parent company (for example, McDonald's or KFC)

shopping center – large building or set of buildings designed expressly for shopping, containing a large number of different stores and usually restaurants as well. Often located in a town center. If this is located outside of a town center, it is often called a shopping mall.
