Three men save a lady
A Chinese woman got stuck in deep silts beside China's Yellow River.
Local firefighters arrived at the scene to help her. They told the woman to spread out to stop further sinking and started to move towards her. The brave firefighters got to the woman and tied a rope around her. She was then pushed out of the silts and examined by a doctor.
Difficult words: silt (sand or wet ground near the river), spread out (make bigger), sink (get down).
Very lucky woman
A security camera in England captured the moment a woman on a bike almost was hit by a high speed train.
This incident happened at a level crossing. The woman didn't stop before the barriers and continued to the railway. She saw that the train was coming so she started to brake. Luckily, she managed to stop.
The video was put on the internet because people want to identify the woman. Police also say that it's one of the closest near misses they have ever seen. They would like to talk with the woman.
Difficult words: level crossing (place where a road and a railway cross), brake (slow down or stop completely), near miss (dangerous situation in which you don't get hurt, but it's really close).
Dangerous hornets
A province in northwest China is having serious problems with dangerous insects. Many people have been injured and 41 people have died.
It's all because of Asian Giant Hornets. This kind of hornet is highly toxic and it often causes a strong allergic reaction. Attacks by the hornets are normal in this part of China, but this year is somehow worse, much worse.
Most of the attacked people are farmers but some cities are in danger. Firefighters are trying to help. They remove the hornets' nests. Good luck!
Difficult words: insect (small animal with six legs), hornet (animal which looks like a big wasp), nest (place where the insects live).
Man has a new nose
A Chinese man didn't want to have surgery after he had a car accident in 2012. However, the surgery was needed because the man's nose was really damaged.
His nose got infected and the infection destroyed his nose completely. The doctors saw only one way to save the man. They decided to grow a new nose on the man's forehead. It looked a little bit strange for him to have a nose on his forehead, but the doctors did a great job. This is an example of medical progress.
The new nose has been growing now for nine months. Doctors say that it all looks well and they are going to put the new nose in its right location soon.
Difficult words: surgery (operation), infect (get ill because of bacteria and viruses), progress (situation of getting better and better).
Eagle and a deer
A great picture was taken by a remote camera in Russia's far east. This camera was set by scientists to watch Siberian tigers, but it captured something else. Something really cool!
The camera captured the moment a big golden eagle attacked a young deer. The eagle killed the deer. Its dead body was found quite damaged.
Eagle attacks on other big animals are common but it is quite rare for one to be photographed. In some countries, eagles are used for hunting deer and even wolves.
Difficult words: remote (the camera takes pictures without people), deer (big animal which lives in a forest), hunt (catch).
Man flies between rocks
There is a man who does dangerous things. He jumps from a helicopter and flies in the air. He does a very difficult jump in China.
After jumping from a helicopter, fell down and had to go between two big rocks. It was really dangerous because there was not much space. The gap was only 20 meters wide at its widest point and just 3.5 meters wide at its narrowest point.
The stunt was filmed and with more than one camera. One camera was even on the man's head. Thanks to this camera, you can see exactly what the man saw during the jump.
Difficult words: gap (space), stunt (dangerous action).
Police try to stop a car
There's a shocking video which was taken in Washington the other day. The video shows a black car which stopped in front of the US Capitol.
Police officers surrounded the car but it sped off. Police shot at the car while it was getting away. In the end, the car was surrounded and the driver killed by the police. It was a woman and she was a mother. Her one year old daughter was inside the car.
Police have been searching the home of the driver. They haven't found anything suspicious and they don't think that the woman was a terrorist.
Difficult words: the other day (few days ago), speed off (get away fast), suspicious (something that could be bad).
Penguins learn how to swim
A zoo in England has something like a school for its little penguins. The little penguins are helped to learn how to swim and hunt in a small pool.
It is important for the little penguins to learn it because as they grow up they will be moved to a bigger pool with bigger penguins. There, the little penguins will have to compete with the others. If they're not good at swimming and hunting, they will not catch anything.
This kind of penguin is called the Humboldt Penguin. Humboldt Penguins are endangered animals which live in South America and the zoo in England has over 40 of them.
Difficult words: hunt (catch other animals to eat them), compete (try to be better than the other ones), endangered (there is not many of them and this kind of animal may die out).
Wingsuit accident in the mountains
A famous veteran wingsuit flyer has died at the world championships in China. The championships took place in the mountains where a famous movie was filmed.
It was very windy during the championships. Powerful gusts of wind changed the flyer's planned route and the parachute didn't open because of technical problems.
The man was an extreme-sport veteran. He parachuted more than 1,000 times and jumped with a wingsuit 700 times.
Two hundred rescuers looked for him. The man's body was found on Wednesday morning.
Difficult words: take place (happen), gust (sudden strong wind), rescuer (somebody who saves people in hard situations).
Journey all around the world
A British woman is travelling around the world. The 20,000 mile trek is called "London2London" and she can use only her body power to travel.
That means she cannot catch a bus or go by car. She must walk, cycle and row. The 28 year old woman departed London on 1st of April, 2011 and she has already travelled 11,000 miles.
She recently has finished a very hard part of the trek. She spent 150 days at sea when she crossed the Pacific Ocean from Japan to Alaska. This was the second and successful attempt to cross the Pacific. The first one was stopped by a tropical storm in 2012.
Difficult words: row (make a boat move with long sticks), depart (leave for a journey), attempt (try).
