THERE IS / THERE ARE

Use THERE IS to speak about things that ARE, EXIST, HAPPEN at some place

• There is a good film on TV tonight.

• There are 250 people in the hotel.

Use NOT to make sentences negative:

• There aren’t any restaurants in the village.

Questions begin with “Is there…”

• Is there a hospital in the town?

Articles

 

A / AN – indefinite article

 

- use a/an when you speak about things for the first time or when you want to say „one“

 

• I live in a big house.

• I want a cheeseburger.

• I have a brother.

 

THE – definite article

 

- use the when you speak about contextual things

 

• I live in a big house. The house is very old.

• Shut the door, please.

• Give me the book!

 

NO ARTICLE

 

- use NO ARTICLE for plural of words with a/an, abstract (love) and uncountable words (water)

• I don‘t like cats.

• Do you listen to rock music?

• Chinese food is the best.

- NO ARTICLE is used in many phrases:

• have breakfast, have lunch, have dinner

• by car, by bus, by plane

• flower – flowers

• bus – buses

- some words are irregular

• man – men

• woman – women

• child – children

• person – people
