WOMAN KILLED BY DIET PILL
A Singapore woman has died after taking a Chinese-made diet pill. At least 14 other people are sick.
The woman, Rani Raja, 43, died on Saturday afternoon from liver problems, a spokeswoman for Gleneagles hospital said on Sunday.
The woman is the first victim in a scandal over the slimming product Slim 10 – an herbal pill. Another person is now in hospital with liver problems and at least 13 others have reported health problems, the newspaper said.
Tests showed that Slim 10, manufactured by Guangdong-based Yue Zhi Tang Health Manufacturing, contained also nicotinamide and fenfluramine in addition to its five listed herbal ingredients. Nicotinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that can cause heart problems when taken in large quantities.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration took fenfluramine off the market in 1997 after evidence showed the drug, when consumed with other slimming agents, could damage the heart.
Singapore's newspapers and magazines are often full of commercial advertisements for slimming pills. Some 20,000 people have probably used Slim 10 since December, local media reported.
