Useful vocabulary and phrases
First, some useful langauge for when an employee is being fired for unsuitable perfomance or breach of conduct:
demonstrated an unacceptable pattern of behavior – He has demonstrated an unacceptable pattern of behaviour in every job he has had..
absent without excuse – Many people have been absent without excuse this month.
strictly a company matter – No one outside the company should hear of this, it is strictly a company matter.
disciplinary notices – All disciplinary notices go into your file
no longer continue your employment – For these reasons, we have decided to no longer continue your employment with out firm.
you can be assured – These words will never leave my office, you can be assured.
clients will look elsewhere – With employees who don’t seem to care, our clients will look elsewhere for services.
decision is effective immediately – Nothing you say can change it, my decision is effective immediately.
no change in your performance – There has been no change in your performance since our last meeting!
Now, some useful language for when the situation is one of lay-offs or redundancy:
will be terminated – If all conditions are not met, the contract will be terminated.
pleased to write a recommendation letter – Most employers would be more than pleased to write a recommendation letter
if you requested one.
with sincere regret – It is with sincere regret that I must turn down your kind offer.
elimination of all contract positions – The immediate elimination of all contract positions would reduce costs by 50%..
given your qualifications and proven abilities – I believe you will be offered the position, given your qualifications and proven abilities.
I must inform you – I must inform you that the meeting has been cancelled.
most productive staff-member – When he was at his best, he was on of our most productive staff-members.
severance package – He has been living off of the large severance package his company gave him while he looks for a new job.
reflection of the general economic downturn – The unemployment statistics are a reflection of the general economic downturn.
reduce the impact – The only way to reduce the impact of this is to be honest and keep our stockholders informed in timely manner.
highly regarded as – He is highly regarded as the foremost economic guru of our time.
