hands-on training – practical, active
An apprenticeship is a paid job that provides a hands-on training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade and who enjoy learning by doing.

in-house training – existing or happening within a company or an organization
The Institute of Export has delivered in-house training to many large organisations both in the UK and abroad.

hard skills – technical or administrative procedures related to an organization’s core business.
Traditional workforce training is often focused on teaching employees new "hard skills," such as training them in a new technology.

soft skills – skills you need to work with other people, also to manage people well
Soft skills, such as the ability to listen and communicate well, separate the merely technically proficient from the all-around team players.

to be skilled at + noun – to have the ability to do something well
He is skilled at negotiations, including technology transaction negotiations and patent litigation strategy discussions.

to be skilled in + gerund – to have the ability to do something well
She is skilled in working with a wide range of adult mental health issues.

coaching – supporting people (clients) to achieve their goals, with goal setting, encouragement and questions. Unlike a counsellor or mentor, a coach rarely offers advice.
You will need coaching when you are having a hard time building rapport with your colleagues.

mentoring – mentors provide their expertise to less experienced individuals in order to help them advance their careers, enhance their education, and build their networks.
Mentoring helped me to regain composure and rebuild self-assurance.

leadership skills – ability to lead a team, organization, country, etc.
The company did well under the leadership of its founder, Haruo Suzuki.

to have a flair for leadership – to have a natural ability to do sth well
She has a real flair for languages.

subordinates – lower in rank or position
His subordinates admired him for his conscientiousness and hard work.

supervision – watching or checking what the subordinates are doing
These functions are performed by Federally-licensed State employees under the supervision of a State manager.

approachable – friendly and easy to talk to
He praised him for being a hands on, approachable boss who likes to be involved with projects.

authoritarian – favouring complete obedience to authority, at the expense of personal freedom
The company is run on authoritarian lines.

tactful – creating a favourable impression by saying or doing the right thing, not offending people
It would have been more tactful not to say anything.

laissez-faire leadership – when the manager provides little or no direction and gives employees as much freedom as possible. All authority or power is given to the employees and they must determine goals, make decisions, and resolve problems on their own.
Scholars call this style laissez-faire leadership, while others would argue that it’s non-leadership.

self-starter – someone who is eager to succeed and able to work well on their own, without needing help or instructions
Management is seeking to promote ambitious self-starters.

self-motivated/self-driven – having initiative to undertake or continue a task or activity without another's prodding or supervision.
Our growing software company is looking for a hard-working, self driven employee to work full-time as a receptionist.

computer-literate – familiar with computers and how they work
He said he would scan the cover, but he is not very computer-literate.

delegation/to delegate – to give part of your power or work to someone else, usually someone in a lower position than you
You should learn to delegate and create more time for your important tasks!

empowerment/to empower – the idea that decision, where possible, should be made by employees who are close to the issues or problems to be solved, without having to consult their managers
The trend is towards empowerment and allowing junior employees to take personal initiatives that normally would have been beyond the scope of their jobs.

to impose one's decisions – to make somebody forcefully accept a decision
Sam Chisholm had a very autocratic management style because he imposed all his decisions on others.

morale – the level of confidence and positive feelings among a group of people who work together
On-site child care, increase worker's job satisfaction and morale.

brainstorming – a way of developing new ideas and solving problems by having a meeting where everyone makes suggestions and these are discussed

to implement ideas – to put them into effect

casual Fridays – (also known as Dress-down Friday or simply Casual day) is an American and Canadian business, custom which has spread to other parts of the world, wherein some offices celebrate a day off from a formal dress code.
Some businesses have introduced casual Fridays, welcoming jeans into offices and boardrooms.

high-flyer – a young employee expected to rise to a senior managerial position
Leading seaman medic Michael Floyd has a hobby which is not only unusual it made him a real high-flyer.

magnate (media, press, shipping, oil) – a very powerful and rich person who owns a large company or group of companies
In 2001, NTV passed from control of press magnate Vladimir Gusinsky into the hands of gas monopoly Gazprom after a takeover battle.

mogul (movie, media, shipping) – someone who has great power and influence in a particular industry or activity
A Jewish real estate mogul, Jerry Moore, is worth over $400 million, owning over 140 shopping centres in Houston.

tycoon (property, software) – someone who is successful in business and industry and has a lot of money and power
Paley, the son of a cigar making tycoon, took over control of CBS with his fathers financial support.

business empire – a group of companies or organizations controlled by one powerful company or person
The Bond business empire was once worth about $3.5 billion.

to found/establish a company – to set up a firm basis
In 1996 they founded Riegler Riewe Architects, and opened a branch office in the Hague.

to head up a department – to be in charge of a group, an organization, or part of an organization
Perelman heads up the Revlon cosmetics empire.

executive – someone who has an important job as a manager in a company or business
One of the BBC's top executives was working under a freelance contract

senior executive – of higher or the highest rank or standing.
She works as a PA to a senior executive.

Ltd, limited (liability) company – a company where the shareholders will lose only what they have invested if the company goes bankrupt and will not lose other property that they own
Greenway Centre Ltd went bust in 2000 after running up debts of more than ?100000.

PLC, public limited company – a limited company whose shares are freely sold and traded
Media Square plc was floated in September 2000 and is now one of the largest and fastest growing UK-quoted marketing companies.

Inc., Incorporated – used after the name of a company in the US to show that it is a corporation
Fleetwood Enterprises Inc, was founded in 1950, by John Crean, an immensely talented entrepreneur.

non-profit organization – an organization whose primary objective is to support an issue or matter of private interest or public concern for non-commercial purposes, without concern for monetary profit.
Alteris, Inc. was founded in 2002 to develop vaccines and therapeutics for the treatment of multiple cancer types.

volunteer – a person who performs a service willingly and without pay
We live in a neighbourhood where all the firehouses are run by volunteers.

fund-raising – the activity of obtaining money for political parties, charities, etc., also the activity of obtaining money for investment
"Literaturnaya Rossiya" has launched a fundraising drive for the cathedral.

donations – money or other valuable things given to a person or organization in order to help them.
The maximum individual donation to political candidates, now $1,000 will be cut in half.

charity – an organization that collects money to help people, for example those who are sick or poor, or to help certain types of activity such as artistic activity
All the money raised will go to charity.

NGO – A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a private institution that is independent of the government
